Visa information for travelers to the Netherlands

Travelers from all African and Middle-Eastern countries need a visa to enter the Netherlands: a Schengen visa. A Schengen visa is a single visa valid for the following ‘Schengen” countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
The Schengen visa can be issued by any Embassy or Consulate (General) (from now on called mission) of the above-mentioned countries and allows the holder to travel freely in and through all Schengen countries without having to obtain a visa for each country separately. However, entry can be refused if not all admission requirements are fulfilled at the time of entering the Schengen territory.

For most nationalities, Ugandan included, when traveling from a Non-Schengen country to a Schengen country and then connecting within a few hours to another Non-Schengen country, no transit visa is required.

Visa requirements

Requirements in general depend on the nature of the intended visit. The most important requirements can be found in the attached document:

Residence permit for travelers to the Netherlands

The Dutch government maintains an admissions policy for aliens who want to come to the Netherlands.

The admissions policy is regulated by the Dutch Aliens Act.

If a person wants to stay in the Netherlands for longer than three months, depending on the nationality, this person will have to request an authorisation for temporary stay, called MVV. This is a special visa that will allow someone to enter the Netherlands and is issued to those who satisfy all the requirements for a residence permit in the Netherlands. Once someone has arrived in the Netherlands, he/she has to exchange the MVV for a Temporary Residence Permit.

In accordance with the new MVV-procedure that started the 1st of July 2002, there are two ways of starting the application procedure for an MVV. One can do the application him/herself at the Royal Netherlands Embassy, or a partner of the applicant in the Netherlands can start this procedure in the Netherlands.

A visa applicant must hand in his/her application form in threefold duly completed and signed personally with the following supporting documents:

  • a passport which is valid for at least nine (9) months;
  • three passport sized photographs have to be submitted;
  • birth certificate legalized by the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
    which will then be legalized by this embassy for a fee
  • a certificate of non-marriage, in case of family formation, when a person is 15 years or older given by the Ministry of Justice, legalized by the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs which will be then legalized by this embassy for a fee
  • copy of the passport;
  • invitation from the private person in the Netherlands which has to be faxed directly to this Embassy on faxnumber 00 256-41-231.861
  • a guarantee letter dated not older than three (3) months of the invitor in the Netherlands which has to be an official one, issued and stamped by the Municipality where the inviting party resides, faxed directly to this Embassy on the above mentioned faxnumber;
  • a copy of the passport of the invitor faxed directly to this Embassy
